Manfred was regent of Sicily for his nephew, child Conrad 2, but took crown in 1258, & continued to fight to keep kingdom under Hohenstaufen. In 1254 pope, having declared kingdom a papal possession, offered crown to King of Englands son, Edmund Crouchback, but English never succeeded in taking kingdom. In 1262 pope reversed his previous decision & granted kingdom to King of Frances brother, Charles of Anjou, who succeeded in dispossessing Manfred in 1266. Conradin continued his claim to throne until his death by decapitation perpetrated by Charles of Anjou in 1268. |
